Greenhouse Gases

Definition: These are gases that absorb and radiate heat and play a role in the greenhouse effect (the process by which thermal radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases and re-radiated in all directions). The major gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.

The emission of greenhouse gases is contributing to global warming, partly because there are too many sources and not enough sinks (which remove gases from the atmosphere and convert them into different chemicals).
